Genital Lightening
Darkening of the skin in the genital area is very common and usually entirely normal; hormones, friction, hair removal, pregnancy and age all affect this colour. It is not a sign of disease. Nevertheless, assessment can be offered to women who are troubled by the appearance.
The cause is examined first
A change in colour is sometimes a sign of an underlying condition: fungal infection, lichen disorders, chronic irritation and certain hormonal states all cause darkening.
The first step is therefore examination, not a cosmetic procedure. Where an underlying problem exists it is treated first — and the colour often improves with that treatment alone.
What increases darkening
- Constant use of tight or synthetic clothing
- Frequent waxing and shaving
- Chronic moisture, sweating and irritation
- Pregnancy and hormonal change
- Weight gain and friction
- The natural characteristics of your skin — inherited and not changeable
Approach
- Removing the sources of irritation — in many women this alone makes a visible difference
- Targeted treatment where infection or a skin condition is present
- Topical skin care under medical supervision
- Laser or chemical treatments in selected cases
- Over-the-counter bleaching products must NEVER be used in this area — they can cause permanent burns and loss of pigment
Honest expectations
These treatments do not aim to make the skin lighter than its natural colour; they aim to reduce darkening caused by irritation. Results vary between individuals and more than one session is usually needed.
There is no colour that any woman's genital area is "supposed" to be. This is not a medical necessity but a personal choice.
