Uterine Evacuation
Uterine evacuation is the removal of pregnancy tissue remaining within the womb. It is most often required after an incomplete miscarriage or where no fetal heartbeat is found. As with every procedure, the decision is made on medical assessment and within the applicable regulations.
When it is required
- A pregnancy in which no heartbeat is found
- Tissue remaining in the womb after an incomplete miscarriage
- Continued bleeding or infection following miscarriage
- Retained placental tissue after childbirth
- Other situations judged medically necessary by the treating doctor
The options
There are three approaches depending on the situation: expectant management (many miscarriages complete on their own), medical management with medication, and surgical evacuation. The choice is made together, taking account of gestation, the amount of bleeding, any signs of infection and your own preference.
Surgical evacuation is a short procedure, usually carried out under anaesthesia, and same-day discharge is normally possible.
After the procedure
- Light bleeding and cramping for a few days are expected
- Avoid intercourse, tampons and swimming for about two weeks
- The first period usually returns within 4 to 6 weeks
- Women who are Rhesus negative receive a protective injection
- The follow-up appointment should not be missed
When to seek help without waiting
- Bleeding that soaks a pad every hour
- Fever and offensive discharge
- Severe abdominal pain that does not settle
- Faintness
The next pregnancy
One miscarriage does not mean that future pregnancies will also be lost. The body is allowed to recover before planning the next pregnancy; when that is appropriate is decided together at the follow-up appointment.
