IVF Treatment

In IVF the egg and sperm are brought together in the laboratory and the resulting embryo is placed into the uterus. By law the treatment is provided only in licensed assisted reproduction (ART) centres. This page is general information for women who are considering or have been referred for the process.
Who it is offered to
- Blocked or removed fallopian tubes
- Significant male factor
- Advanced endometriosis
- Ovulation disorders where other treatments have not succeeded
- Age-related reduction in ovarian reserve
- Unexplained infertility not responding to other treatment
Assessment before treatment
Before the process begins, ovarian reserve (AMH and antral follicle count on ultrasound), hormone profile, uterine structure and semen analysis are completed. Thyroid function, vitamin D, glucose control and infectious disease screening are reviewed.
Where there is a polyp, fibroid or adhesion within the cavity, correcting it before starting treatment matters for protecting the chance of success.
Stages of the process
- Stimulation of the ovaries with medication, monitored by ultrasound
- Trigger injection and egg collection
- Fertilisation in the laboratory (IVF or ICSI)
- Monitoring of the embryos
- Embryo transfer
- Pregnancy test two weeks later
What determines success
The most decisive factor is the woman's age; both the number and the quality of eggs decline with age. Ovarian reserve, semen parameters, the structure of the womb lining and any coexisting conditions also affect the outcome.
Achieving a healthy body weight, stopping smoking and regular sleep — factors often underestimated — make a measurable contribution to the result.
Discussing expectations
No treatment offers a guarantee of success, and none can. A realistic expectation of success, the likely number of attempts and the cost of each stage are discussed openly before starting. The emotional burden of the process is part of that conversation.
